The 4th Annual Solstice Arts festival held June 20th, 2009 started out a wet one. As artists set up, dark clouds and heavy rains swept in and drenched the area. Undaunted, the artists and vendors set their booths and weathered the storm. Not long after, all were rewarded when the sun appeared and brightened the day. Despite the early rain, the festival grounds were soon crowded with visitors buying artwork, painting on the art wall, enjoying the music and culinary delights.

The 5th annual SHAPE Solstice Arts Festival will be held June 19th, 2010. There will be even more artists this year, displaying, selling and demonstrating their art. The work ranges from pottery, glass blowing, fiber arts, painting, photography, jewel-crafting, and sculpture to name a few. Many of these artists will be creating their works at the festival for the curious to watch. On the amphitheater stage throughout the day there will be live music, interpretive dance, drumming, and an open mic segment for any aspiring musicians or poets to share their talents. New to the festival is the Eco-Village. Here you will find organizations promoting green, sustainable living and environmental awareness. The culinary court will be filled with a wide range of tastes to choose from, as well as things to cool off from a hot day. For our younger visitors, there is a tent filled with a variety of art projects that can be created and taken home. Of course what children's area would be complete without face painting by local artists. And of course a SHAPE favorite, the Art Wall will be there and waiting to be covered in paint with artistic expressions from visitors of all ages.

Poster from 2009

The Solstice Arts Festival is held annually on the third Saturday in June. Summer solstice was the time of year chosen to hold the festival for the positive mood, excitement and feeling of relaxing fun that the beginning of summer inspires in everybody. The festival originated as an event to celebrate the fine arts and give artists a chance to bring their talents to the public. The growing interest from artists, musicians, chefs, performers and a culture seeking public have fueled the continued expansion of this unique arts festival. Artists from as far away as North Carolina to New York have planted their booths in Shippensburg for a day. The number of visitors doubled from the first festival to the second, and we are anticipating an even larger response this year. The festival is held at the Shippensburg Township Park on Britton road. The park was chosen for its pleasant country setting and ample parking. The park features a large amphitheater, open grassy areas, restroom facilities, picnic pavilions, playgrounds, water features to cool off under, and access to the Cumberland Valley Rails to Trails for those who want to wander under the trees.
